Practical Tool 1

Source Location Chart

Description

This tool helps teams identify precisely what resources are needed to carry out a project and where those resources can be found. This tool forces teams to break away from their dependence on state support and to seek resources from other sources.

Example

Instructions

Note: Blackline masters of the Resources Square and the Source Location Chart are provided in Appendix A, pages 222 and 223.

1. Display or provide copies of the Resources Square. This graphic helps a group expand its understanding of the available resources in a community. The group may write in any additional resources.

2. Divide the group into program implementation teams and pass out copies of the Source Location Chart. (If the focus is one major project, break the program into components and assign teams to different components.)

3. Ask teams to brainstorm what they need to make the program (or program component) succeed. Teams may wish to consult the Resources Square.

4. Brainstorm potential sources for each of the needs.

5. Build an action plan (what, when, who) for obtaining the resources. Community representatives can be of great assistance in gathering resources. Encourage teams to recruit community representatives to help in this massive task.

Possible Uses

This tool can be useful at the beginning of school change when the school and the community are unaccustomed to seeking resources. This tool can also be implemented when a budget cut forces schools to look elsewhere for resources. As teams successfully connect with resource providers, they gain confidence in approaching outside sources for support.
